Following the last post I made on cardiac arrest, a vital skill to have is the skill of performing CPR. It is a vital life-saving skill that anyone can learn.
In an emergency, knowing how to perform CPR can make a significant difference in someone's chance of survival.
Let's dive into the basics of CPR:
Check the Scene: Before approaching the victim, ensure the scene is safe for both you and the person in need. Look for any potential dangers, such as traffic or hazardous materials.
Check Responsiveness: Gently tap the victim and shout, "Are you okay?" If they don't respond, it's time to act.
Call for Help: Dial emergency services (911 or your local emergency number) or instruct someone nearby to do so.
Start Chest Compressions: Place the heel of your hand on the center of the victim's chest, just below the nipple line. Use your other hand to interlock your fingers. Push hard and fast at a rate of 100-120 compressions per minute.
Give Rescue Breaths: If you're trained and comfortable with it, give rescue breaths. Tilt the victim's head back, pinch their nose shut, and give two breaths. Watch for chest rise.
Continue CPR: Keep doing cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths until help arrives or the victim shows signs of life.
Use an AED (if available): Automated External Defibrillators can analyze the heart's rhythm and shock it if needed.
Remember, the goal of CPR is to keep oxygenated blood flowing to the vital organs until professional help arrives.
Learning and practicing these steps can empower you to make a life-saving difference when it matters most.
